How do I get traffic to my blog?

This is one of the first questions new bloggers ask and it’s one that even experienced bloggers find difficult to answer.

Google dominates the search engines and Google has said that they rank websites and blogs based on how many other websites and blogs link to them. The reasoning is that if someone bothers to put a link to your blog on their site they must think you are good. And what Google does, the other search engines do too.

So, to get traffic to your blog you have to be visible in the search engines and to be visible in the search engines you have to have inbound links pointing to your blog. These inbound links are known in the trade as ‘backlinks’.

But there’s more. Google has also said that the higher the rank of the site linking to you, the more valuable that backlink is. Google ranks sites from 0 – 10 where 10 is the highest. Ideally, to get good quality backlinks, what you want is backlinks from sites ranked 4 or more.

Now how on earth do you do that when nobody has ever heard of you? How do you persuade a PR8 site to give you a backlink?
