How often have you seen ‘Powered By WordPress’ at the bottom of a webpage?

When you see that it means that the website is actually a WordPress blog rather than a traditional website. That may surprise you when you look at it because it might not look like a blog at all.

When WordPress was first developed its main function was to act as an online journal. Bloggers (usually individuals) would post daily (hourly?) updates to record changes in their fascinating lives. But these early WordPress bloggers became more demanding in the functionality they required and soon WordPress became so powerful and flexible that it began to be adopted by the mainstream.

WordPress is now used as a web platform by some of the biggest names on the web. Why? Because it’s powerful and easy to use and it cuts out all the hassle of in-house web design and development. Let’s face it, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel when someone’s already done it.

Check out these big names who use WordPress:

If so, welcome. Check out my new WordPress tutorial which will get you off to a great start.

The beauty of WordPress is that it’s free to use and you can create a really wonderful looking blog without having to know any HTML or CSS or any of that technical stuff. Even if you are a complete, wet behind the ears, totally dumb-ass newbie, you too can learn how to build your own WordPress blog. With my WordPress tutorial you’ll sail through!

And don’t think WordPress is just for bloggers. WordPress is a complete web platform. If you want to you can build a blog that looks just like a website. Nobody will know that you haven’t employed the services of a smart web designer to code it all for you (except you – because you won’t have to pay any bills!)

No excuses. No prevarication. Get 2009 off to a great start by downloading my new WordPress tutorial and starting to learn WordPress today!

What’s the best way to learn WordPress?

As with anything unfamiliar, the best way to start learning WordPress is to start simple.

If you are starting from absolutely Square One then don’t expect to leap straight into Square Nine! On the contrary, start at the beginning and progress step by step, one step at a time.

If you are a newbie, or you have no prior blogging experience, you might find the first two or three steps to be quite a steep learning curve. But the good news is that the curve soon flattens out and you begin, quite quickly, to ‘get it’. Just stick with the first few unfamiliar steps and you’ll soon be up and running.

Trust me, once you become familiar with the WordPress environment you’ll find it easy to explore and experiment and find your own way round.

If you have big ambitions about your blog, particularly if you want to use your blog to make money, you should be planning to go the WordPress.org route where you hang your blog on your own domain.

But, use the WordPress.com free blogging option as your practice ground. Learn the ropes first: practice, experiment and learn. Then when you’re comfortable with WordPress.com, then you can upgrade to WordPress.org.

Ready to begin? Check out my free WordPress tutorial to get you started on WordPress.com now!
